Throughout the decades of racial tensions and violent conflicts, sparked a movement of freedom and justice. Two brave and impactful men, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, both wanted equality between the negroes and the whites. Their leadership as well as their courage helped change the world for the better, and encouraged others to stand up for what they believe in and impact the world around them.
As a child, Martin Luther King Jr. came across many encounters with racial discriminations. He began to see the many racial conflicts and tensions between negros and whites and he decided to do something about it to stop racial segregation. He worked hard for what he wanted, which eventually led to him giving his very impactful “I Have A Dream” speech. Malcolm X also had issues involving discrimination. In the contrary, Malcolm X became hooked on drugs and shortly after had landed in prison within his early years. Malcolm X then converted to Islam, which changed his life. He began to fight harder for his rights, which encouraged others to do so as well.
Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X shared some similar qualities and ideas. They both wanted to end racial discrimination, and equality between the negroes and the whites. They stood up for themselves, as well as the negroes around them, while seeking a similar solution. “When we allow freedom to ring, all people will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the Negro spiritual.” (MLK I Have a Dream speech). “We must clear the way for another generation coming up that will not only know what it wants and know what it should have, but also will be ready (Malcolm X, Address To a Meeting, New York 1964). They both strived for freedom, and eventually, their huge impact paid off.
Although they both seeked similar solutions, their point of view’s or beliefs on how they wanted to solve the issue of racial segregation were quite different. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. believed in Nonviolence and peace, whereas Malcolm X believed in fighting against those who caused racial tensions. Martin Luther King Jr’s point of view of, justice and liberty will evolve from non violence and the ringing of freedom, is explained by his “I Have a Dream” speech. “Go back to the slums and ghettos of our Northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed,” (MLK, I Have a Dream speech). Malcolm X’s point of view of, Negroes must fight to eliminate the evils causing racial conflicts, is explained by his speech in New York, 1964. “There are 22,000,000 African Americans who are ready to fight for independence right here,” (Malcolm X, Address to a Meeting, New York 1964). Their differences were what made them who they were, and that helped the world around them.
Both leaders point of view reflect different attitudes and beliefs from the time period of the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. had a peaceful and non-violent aspect as one could tell from his speech. Malcolm X had a violent and vigourous aspect which was shown through his speech.
In conclusion, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Malcolm X both had their own point of view on racial discrimination. Martin Luther King Jr.’s point of view was “Justice and liberty will evolve from nonviolence and the ringing of freedom”. Whereas Malcolm X’s point of view was “Negroes must fight to eliminate the evils causing racial conflicts”. Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X changed the world around them, and helped end racial discrimination. Both men had many differences involving their personality and ideas, but in the end, they helped to solve the issue of racial discrimination.
